HAVIS, INC.

At Havis, a maker of products for workers on the move, Ed Ford puts a premium on connectivity, which goes hand in hand with safety. If the internet is down, he explains, everything falls apart: team members cannot access the factory schedule and lose visibility in the production process.

Being connected is also critical for safety. It means workers have easy access to updates, which often centre on safety issues. Connected equipment, such as precise electrochemical machining (PEM) units, guide team members on safe and effective usage, including how much force to apply. Using the wrong amount of force can damage materials and put people at risk by causing parts to break off, and so forth.

A Getac user, Ed says rugged laptops, tablets, software, video cameras, accessories and peripherals all play a role in helping him achieve his goals at work and maintain a safe environment. Havis uses tablets throughout its press brake and PEM areas; Getac software programs allow team members to view build instructions, schedules and other relevant documents as well as track quality; barcode scanners help count inventory and locate parts; and video cameras help uphold safety and accountability.

Keeping team members safe is a prerequisite for success, which Ed also defines as minimising downtime, comprehensive performance in extreme working environments, and seamless teamwork. In his line of work, rugged, hardworking technology of one kind enables the creation of another, which goes on to support emergency and public safety workers as they perform their vital operations.

ED FORD, FABRICATION SUPERVISOR

HON-TSAI TECHNOLOGY

Promoting a culture of occupational safety is a priority and ongoing challenge for Hon-Tsai Technology (HTTC), a provider of management and engineering software. With HTTC’s years of experience in workplace safety, the company discovered that not all businesses are making the most of the technology available to them. In some cases, those overseeing operations at factories and construction sites remain mired in paperwork and lack the will or know-how to adopt technology for greater efficiency and safety. Consultation is usually necessary to encourage the transition and raise understanding of workplace health and safety measures.

HTTC defines a successful workplace as one where all staff can complete their tasks safely and efficiently. The diverse nature of its customers calls for flexibility to achieve this. Typical scenarios range from implementing anti-explosivity facilities in environments with flammable and explosive materials to ensuring workers can readily report instances of hazards such as toxic gas. To ensure occupational safety, HTTC suggests companies should equip its workers in these scenarios with devices that minimize downtime and cost, and can adapt to extreme environments without any impact on performance.

The company sees the need for organizations to combine dependable equipment with environment design that has safety at its core. Designing a safe environment naturally means being on top of the latest government regulations, but it also means truly understanding workers’ needs through direct, large-scale interviews. Ultimately, HTTC believes that enterprises can put in place the highest possible safety standards once they understand the importance of doing so and view the task as a collaborative effort.

AKUT

An NGO specializing in search and rescue operations in mountainous and other natural environments, AKUT is the only Turkish organization in its field to have been classified by the United Nations International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG). As such, part of its mission is to share knowledge and experience to help advance its field in Turkey and internationally.

Planning is key to effective search and rescue, and AKUT uses Getac’s rugged notebooks to assist
the process. The devices enable tracking and monitoring in field operations, making the coordination
center’s work more manageable. They also help the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Unit perform in the field in inclement weather by supporting the assessment of conditions and outcomes post-mission.

Ultimately, AKUT exists to save lives. Technology makes its work possible, while protecting the lives of its own brave team members.

CHRISTOPHER HOCKING

In an industrial setting, fatigue can be deadly. At Optalert, Christopher Hocking is responsible for products that help detect signs of drowsiness in fields such as mining and transport. His company’s core product, Eagle Industrial, is a piece of software that monitors drowsiness levels in real-time via Getac’s ZX70 rugged tablet.

To be effective, an early-warning drowsiness detection system needs to be able to read alertness levels continuously and reliably in a wide range of conditions – from deep underground to on the road. By tracking alertness behind the wheel for the duration of a journey, for instance, drivers and their supervisors have the visibility they need to avoid an accident. Installed in the cabin, Eagle Industrial integrates with Optalert’s wired and wireless glasses to display a drowsiness score for operators and a reading in the cloud for managers.

Christopher appreciates the durability of Getac’s devices, which he says stand up to challenges of humidity, dust and dirt, and continue operating at peak performance for extended periods. “Optalert is still operating Getac rugged devices in the field after six years, proving their longevity and reliability,” he says.

Discover how a sailing coach’s experience highlights technology’s ability to build confidence and spur higher achievement in a challenging and competitive field.

Tania Elías Calles

Tania Elías leads Somos México, an organization that prepares young sailors for Olympic competition. A four-time Olympian herself, she admits that top-level sailing needs more women, including coaches.

Part of the issue is the risk and physical strain involved in competitive sailing. She cites long periods away from home around the Olympic cycle, rough seas and high speed as putting women off. She has succeeded largely through sheer determination, but has also found support from technology, with Getac devices helping to simplify the process by removing the guesswork from understanding the weather and environment when out at sea.

Tania defines success as having clarity of vision and the strength to execute on it. “It is all about a process and taking satisfaction from the small steps that take you closer to the big dream,” she says. “There has to be something big at the end of the road, something that makes you shake a little bit and hungry to go after it.”

Her immediate goal is to lead Mexico to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics, and ultimately bring home its first Olympic medal from Los Angeles in 2028 — big dreams, but ones that are also within reach.

Harriette Wysocki

As a business leader in the electronic distribution space, Harriette champions the concept of winning with the team. She is passionate about helping others succeed, both at an individual and group level. She does this by ensuring everyone has the opportunities and resources they need to grow, as well as creating an atmosphere of trust whereby individuals are encouraged to support each other to achieve goals.

Harriette is a big believer in the importance of strong company culture. The close-knit nature of her company and sense of being valued as part of a team forms a solid foundation from which to flourish in the face of adverse or unexpected scenarios: people know they can rely on one another and this gives them the confidence to move forward.

The industry Jarltech operates in is fast-paced and puts importance on networking and relationship-building. For women to succeed in the sector, Harriette advocates self-belief and having the strength to speak up. “You could be adding a new perspective to a situation so you cannot let fear of rejection keep you in your comfort zone,” she says. “Everyone will have an opinion, so as long as you hold your integrity and keep your word, you will be valued.”

COUNTRY MANAGER, UK & IRELAND, JARLTECH EUROPE

Siân Jones

Based in the picturesque town of Chirk, North Wales, in the United Kingdom, Siân heads a company that prides itself on the long life of its products. For her, rugged computing hardware is more interesting than consumer computing because even as performance undergoes continuous improvements, the devices are built to last.

“I love being called by a client from four or five years ago who is finally looking to replace their rugged hardware, having managed to keep it in the field far longer than any consumer devices they’ve used previously,” she says.

Like the devices her company provides, Siân is no-nonsense and believes in clear and honest communication at all times, both internally and externally. While the last six years have been challenging, due to Brexit as much as the pandemic, this approach has carried her company through and made stressful times easier to manage.

For the next generation of women looking to enter the space, she has this advice: “Knowledge is powerful and can disarm anyone looking to prevent you succeeding, so always keep learning in your field. Stay up to speed with new developments and technologies, and try not to imagine artificial boundaries to your abilities. No matter our gender, we are all capable of learning new skills and becoming specialists in our field.”

MANAGING DIRECTOR, RUGGED MOBILE SYSTEMS

Yilien He

As well as driving company growth, Yilien sees her role as being to help make workplaces safer. This provides strong motivation to the extent where she welcomes all challenges as a chance to grow and gain new experience.

She especially enjoys working with industry experts to advance the safety sector, which often turns out to be a surprisingly creative process that yields new perspectives. When she entered the business, she decided to pursue a master’s degree in environment, health and safety engineering, which she says was difficult but rewarding. “I love how my job inspires me to continue my personal growth,” she says.

To succeed in a sales and marketing role, Yilien says sincerity towards both customers and oneself is the most important quality. “Looking at your own disadvantages honestly is the only way to improve and can even turn weakness into opportunity,” she says. “This also applies to the industrial safety sector, where we avoid accidents by looking at all details including flaws with sincerity and honesty.”

She sees today’s environment as more inclusive, but admits that unconscious bias around gender means women still need to work harder to gain recognition. She hopes the industry continues to open up so that everyone can enter it on a truly equal footing. To the next generation, she urges: “Don’t be limited by gender, and always strive to be the best version of yourself.”

DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND SALES, HON-TSAI TECHNOLOGY

Margie Pachner

As a product marketer at Gamber-Johnson, a specialist in mobile mounting solutions for public safety and enterprise customers, Margie Pachner supports technology that helps people in critical situations. This in itself provides a high level of job satisfaction, but she finds the culture of the workplace equally inspiring.

Collaboration and learning are key to success, Margie says, adding that she has progressed the most when “breaking down barriers and building relationships based on collective growth”. Company structure is such that she has frequent opportunities to work with people from diverse backgrounds and skillsets and develop knowledge outside the field of marketing.

Margie is motivated by challenges, which she looks at as opportunities for innovation and improvement. In one example, she used her past experience in the consumer packaged goods sector to introduce Zirkona, a mount for small tablets and other devices, to the consumer market as an outdoor activities brand.

To succeed in their careers, women need support both inside and outside the walls of the company, Margie says. At Gamber-Johnson, she has been able to pursue an MBA in conjunction with full-time work, which she says has broadened her personal and professional life and equipped her to take on new responsibilities. She advises not to be afraid of failure and to find ways to benefit from mistakes. “Growth is not always a linear path so learn from your experiences, from those around you, and build up others. When your team succeeds, you succeed.”

PRODUCT MARKETER, GAMBER-JOHNSON

Kari Haser

Kari Haser is responsible for the journey of rugged mobile mounting products with a focus on public safety and enterprises. She is also a single parent of a young son. She describes her company as having a supportive environment that encourages constructive criticism and out-of-the-box thinking, which has helped her power through numerous unprecedented industry challenges over the last few years, including the global chip shortage.

She is a strong believer in work-life balance. Women can fulfil multiple roles concurrently — that of a fully engaged parent, homemaker and professional — but only with the support and understanding of their employers. She attributes success at work to good communication and being able to learn from constructive criticism. She takes feedback from customers, management and teammates with an open mind.

Kari advises professional women to never underestimate their abilities. “There will be challenges in every position that you hold throughout your working life, but instead of letting those challenges become limiting beliefs about yourself or your abilities, use them as an opportunity to grow and become stronger.”
