TERMINAL PACIFICO SUR VALPARAISO

LAURA CHIUMINATTO

As a port terminal in 24/7 operation for 363 days a year, Terminal Pacifico Sur Valparaiso runs on teamwork. Laura Chiuminatto helps oversee the port's commitment to sustainability as well as activities to develop the city of Valparaiso looking as far as 50 years into the future. This involves building close relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, from large enterprises to the port's neighbors.

Laura sees trust, empathy and resilience as fundamental to workplace collaboration, but underscores the importance of perspective and purpose. For her, teamwork depends on being able to see things from multiple viewpoints while converging on a common aim. When working across departments, her top considerations are shared organizational values and the development of a clear strategy. Personal qualities including passion, transparency, commitment, integrity, humility and respect have helped Laura work effectively as part of a team and as a result progress personally. For those looking to enter the field of transport and logistics, Laura advises pursuing dreams to land in places that bring personal fulfillment. "Limitations are set by the individual," she says, "Talking about the sky as a limit today is already obsolete; we have an immense universe to explore."

SENIOR SALES PROCESS LEADER, GAMBER-JOHNSON

KRISTA SLUSARSKI

Overseeing sales for a rugged mounting systems specialist is a social role that calls for solution-based thinking. A typical day sees Krista Slusarski work with everyone from accountants to engineers, managers and warehouse staff around the world to address customer needs. As part of a cross-functional quick response team, she also ensures that the customer's voice is heard in the product development process.

Krista's own working process is far from straightforward, and can include challenges like language barriers and time-zone differences. As well as being flexible, she operates with three principles in mind: honesty, helpfulness and compassion. Being honest at all times breeds trust in customers and an open, positive environment internally. A genuine willingness to help creates a solid foundation for ongoing working relationships. And understanding what others are dealing with helps ensure a measured response to even the most difficult situations.

An important part of maintaining a positive mindset for Krista is asking questions. Krista points out that collaborative working removes the pressure to have all the answers, as well as bringing multiple perspectives to bear on an issue. Lastly, she believes in the power of praise. "A little encouragement can go a long way," she says. "And don't forget to provide some encouragement to yourself now and then."

IMPLANTS SUPPLY CHAIN ENGINEER, LIMACORPORATE

ILARIA BULFON

"Introducing and managing change can be intimidating as it involves giving up habits," says Ilaria Bulfon, whose work often involves just that. For her, successful collaboration is based in listening, trust and accountability. "Only with all three aspects is it possible to achieve challenging and sometimes even seemingly unattainable goals," she explains. When working with cross-functional teams, people's goals often differ. By taking the time to understand everyone's perspective, she finds she is able to balance focus on the overarching project goal and individual requirements.

A project that Ilaria is leading aims to eliminate paper documentation from production. The exercise is more complex than it sounds, but solutions have come from talking and questioning. Proposals that were not feasible sparked new ideas that led to systemic improvement. "Collaboration enables results that are impossible individually and makes work more satisfying and engaging," she says. Ultimately, the prospect of sharing the success of a project with the whole team "makes it far more motivating and inspiring".

Ilaria's advice for new entrants to her field is to start by asking questions to get a feel for the dynamics and business processes. While confidence in one's own skills and ideas is important, she notes that it is equally valuable to be able to "question oneself should the need arise", and to work with a sense of passion.

COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR, RODIO

MARISOL VALENCIA MÁXIMO

As a commercial director for RODIO, Getac’s partner in Mexico, a day at work for Marisol Valencia Máximo involves collaborating with different departments to address issues and find creative solutions to meet customer needs. Emotional intelligence is an important attribute for Marisol, which she defines as "knowing how to manage emotions with clients and co-workers to master the different scenarios that we face on a daily basis". She also values proactivity and commitment in her team members, and looks for people she can trust. "Collaborate with a team that you have the confidence to assign tasks to knowing they will carry them out in a timely manner," she says.

Marisol is encouraged to see more women being given increasingly more opportunities in her field. She urges women starting to maintain confidence and not allow any form of intimidation to derail their progress. Having the support of a team and an inspiring, supportive boss — male or female — is also crucial. "I have not built a successful career by myself but in conjunction with the team," she says, adding: "Success in any career is discipline, perseverance, responsibility, and believing that gender has no bearing on achievement."

SENIOR SALES EXECUTIVE- PARTNERSHIPS, HAVIS, INC.

DEBI BESMER

Debi Besmer’s work involves identifying new market opportunities with independent software vendors, value-added resellers, and end-users to develop new business in retail, hospitality, healthcare, warehousing, and transportation & logistics. It involves collaboration with all business units including product, engineering and operations.

Apart from being able to communicate with a degree of humility, she lists tenacity and dedication as essential qualities in her line of work. "In a sales role, it's helpful to remember that for every door that closes, another one will open," she says. Dedication meanwhile depends on being aligned with the company's values. "Once that happens, dedication comes easily."

Debi firmly believes that good communication is the foundation of meaningful collaboration. In the early stages of a sales career, she advises having the courage to "lean in and ask questions" when necessary. It helps to find a mentor and ask for self-development guidance. In terms of output, "do the research to make sure your contributions are bringing value to better the company or situation".
