Broadening the scope of Marine Mammal Hearing Research

Studying the hearing systems of marine mammals is fascinating work that allows researchers to understand how ocean noise impacts the habitat. The National Marine Mammal Foundation selected Getac for a rugged and dependable mobile computing solution that could stand up to the extreme conditions of the sea. With the support of Getac laptops, the team was able to step up its research, studying the impact of ocean noise on their subjects around the world by playing sounds to them and monitoring their brain waves in their natural habitat rather than in a laboratory. Safe in the knowledge that their equipment can withstand moisture, dust and sand, the team has become more dynamic and able to broaden the scope of their explorations and ultimately their understanding of how marine mammals live.

Supporting an Intrepid and Sustainable Automotive Expedition

4x4 Electric is a fully electric, self-sufficient car expedition from the Netherlands to South Africa and back. The year-long initiative kicked off in November 2022 with a regular electric car chargeable with portable solar panels. The team is sleeping in a tent on the roof of the vehicle, cooking using renewable electricity and showering with water purified by the car. With the connectivity options of the Getac total computing solution integrated within the car, the expedition team is fully functional at all times and able to gather data from the charging unit and car even in the remotest locations. Vehicle docking from Gamber-Johnson keeps Getac’s rugged tablet stationary and secure on the roughest terrain. This bold undertaking is an important step to demonstrating the power of sustainable technology and inspiring others to explore its potential.

Upholding Better Road Safety and Sustainable Solutions

Road transport is an integral part of Italy’s shipping logistics, often representing the first or last mile within the intermodal transport system. Long distances for industrial vehicles often translate to high diesel consumption and excessive tyre wear. With Getac’s semi-rugged notebook S410, the Italy-based company Pesci Attrezzature is able to offer workshops a solution that prioritizes truck safety and corrects axle alignment in its after-sales services for trucks, such as proper alignment and quality repair systems. The device pairs its portability and durability with leading software for alignment of industrial vehicles and performance of daily tasks. Correct alignment means saving on fuel consumption and reducing overall tyre wear, an essential part of vehicle inspections and repairs for the team. With the right Getac technology combination, the team saw an overall reduction of CO2 emissions and less fine dust particles generated from tyre crumbling. Mechanics are able to minimize vehicle downtime and increase greater safety on the roads, all the while enabling sustainable solutions for a traditional industry.

Technology Helps Combat "Existential Threat" of Biodiversity Loss

Germany is home to the Biodiversity Exploratories, the biggest open research platform of its kind in Europe, which studies biodiversity on farmed plots of land in forests and grassland. The initiative is designed to determine how agricultural practices affect biodiversity and how best to conserve it. Forest inventory, providing important data for many other studies, usually takes place in winter when foliage is at its minimum. The weather can be harsh, with temperatures below freezing as well as elements such as high humidity, snow and rain to contend with. Without the right equipment to record data, the process was difficult, but as Dr. Julia Bass, the project's area manager, notes, the loss of biodiversity poses "an existential threat", so monitoring it and working out how to tackle it is vital.

The platform adopted Getac's rugged T800 tablet together with specialized Field-Map software. The hardware is able to stand up to extreme conditions while providing long-lasting battery life, while the software enables fast, accurate data processing. Manpower and time are in short supply, but with the support of industry-leading technology, the researchers have been able to conduct an inventory of around 35,000 trees within the winter research period. This has proved game-changing for the Biodiversity Exploratories, with important long-term implications for the natural environment.

Achieving sustainability is a widely-held goal that in many cases would benefit from more clearly defined metrics and actions. People do not readily associate rugged technology with environmental protection, but it has an important role to play, and can help organizations work more effectively towards realizing their sustainability objectives.

THE ACTION WE TAKE TO CONSERVE TOGETHER

Getac is committed to being environmentally responsible on a global level, and we believe that every action counts!

To advocate the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) initiative and raise awareness of seashore conservation, on March 25th, 2023, Getac’s Taipei headquarters participated in a beach cleanup at the famous Fulong Beach in Northern Taiwan. With 186 volunteer employees and staff joining the event, the cleanup removed 154.4 kgs of trash, which was sorted according to the standards of The Ocean Conservancy (TOC).

By taking immediate action to protect natural habitats, we hope to raise awareness of the issues of litter and plastic pollution while moving one step closer to our sustainability goals.

As an official PLANT-MY-TREE^® Gold Partner, our Germany team planted 1,000 trees in just one day on March 31st 2023, to actively participate in preserving our planet for a better future.

Since 2007, PLANT-MY-TREE^® has been conducting reforestation projects for carbon dioxide compensation. Together we aim to further environmental and climate protection and to build biodiverse habitats to create a greener tomorrow for future generations.
