The international body responsible for promoting and governing the sport of badminton saw a benefit to referees utilizing technology to make accurate calls during games. As the organization responsible for ensuring fair play, maintaining consistency in rules, and organizing major international tournaments, the device was necessary to link the system to live video, input scores accurately, and reference for playback on inbound or outbound calls.
With sports like badminton, which can be played outdoors, especially for beach tournaments or Air Badminton, any device must withstand the direct heat of the sun or the threat of sudden rain. Unlike most commercial laptops or tablets, rugged devices are designed to withstand elements like sand, wind, water, and varying temperatures and weather conditions. These devices must also have a long battery life to last throughout the tournaments, be light and mobile to be brought to other countries for international competitions, and be built tough enough to avoid constant replacement.
A rugged tablet can enhance the role of the referee in multiple ways. The UX10 can be easily mounted onto the referee’s chair and used for an instant video review of close-line calls (inbound/outbound birdie). This reduces the margin of human error and enhances the game's fairness. It can also provide real-time data on player statistics, match progress, and previous decisions, aiding referees in making informed decisions. Apart from being fully operational in any weather, it also has a LumiBond sunlight-readable display, ensuring optimal visibility for outdoor use. The UX10 even has a ‘hot swap’ battery option to safely replace the battery pack without shutting down the device, ensuring it will last for whole-day tournaments.
For full peace of mind, Getac walked through every step of field testing with the client. Specific details, such as the mountings and fittings to the chair or the decision to have a bridge battery due to tournament length, were discussed and led to the chosen solution and flexibility of the configuration. Compared to other consumer tablets, the UX10 has a lower total cost of operation due to its durability and ruggedness, ease of mobility, and infrequent need for repair or replacement. From player data management to live video review, integrating technology in badminton or any outdoor sport leads to an enhanced tournament experience without compromising the integrity of the game.
