Background
Tangaroa Blue Foundation is an Australian-wide non-profit dedicated to the removal and prevention of marine debris, one of the major environmental issues the world faces. They’ve created the AMDI, an on-the-ground network of volunteers, communities, and organizations that contribute data collected at beach and river clean-up events to the AMDI Database, and work on solutions to stop the flow of litter at the source
Challenge
Tangaroa Blue needed to digitize it’s record keeping, which was not proving ideal for the stresses of outdoor work.
AMDI helps communities look after their coastal environment by providing resources and support programs, collaborating with industry and government to create change on a large scale.
To identify sources of marine debris and litter, the volunteers work around various regions in Australia, from Cape York to Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne, through all seasons, with record-keeping formerly done via pen and paper. However, paper is easily misplaced, and doesn’t stand up well to outdoor wear and tear, creating risks for lost data, inefficient processing, and work disruptions – they needed a change.
Solution
The V110 laptop/tablet convertible computer had the outdoor tolerances and remote connectivity needed.
AMDI equipped its volunteers with the Getac V110, which combines portability, mobility, multi-functionality and performance to combat the drastic environments and weather. Weighing just 2.1kg and 12.32 x 9.37 x 1.53-inch in size, the V110 can be configured with the latest Intel® Core™ i5 or i7 processor, delivering an amazing level of CPU performance.
The laptop also features LumiBond 2.0 touchscreen technology, which bonds the display glass with the touch panel and LCD, creating a single pane that is more durable and readable, with better contrast and crisper colors. It also features four advanced touch modes (Touch/Rain, Glove or Pen mode, plus an optional Digitizer mode), and the hard-tip stylus offers precision note-taking.
It’s hybrid design and modest weight of only 2.1kg also make it very easy to carry.

With the waterproof membrane keyboard and red backlight, it allows the user to type accurately even in the dimmest conditions. The V110 also enables the team to consolidate all data from various units and submit it to the AMDI database, keeping in touch with the world while they are out in the field.

About Tangaroa Blue Foundation
Tangaroa Blue Foundation is an Australian registered charity focused on the health of our marine environment, and coordinates the Australian Marine Debris Initiative, an on-ground network of volunteers, communities, organizations and agencies around the country monitoring the impacts of marine debris along their stretch of coastline. The program started in 2004 and has removed over 16 million pieces of marine debris from Australia’s coastline, with data on this debris collated and input into the Australian Marine Debris Database. The foundation supports communities, organizations, agencies and schools through training, clean-up materials and logistical support, educational resources, and analysis of the debris they find.
